A trailer became unhitched from a pickup and was struck by two vehicles early Monday on Interstate 29 in Council Bluffs.
Despite the two crashes, no injuries were reported.
Bluffs police said the crashes occurred about 6 a.m. on southbound I-29 near Nebraska Avenue.
Police said Lucas Dennis, 80, of Winnebago, Minnesota, was northbound on I-29 in a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup pulling a single-axle trailer.
Matthew Ruttle, 41, of Omaha was southbound on I-29 in a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup when the trailer became unhitched.
Police said the safety chains on the trailer failed to secure the trailer when it unhitched.
The trailer crossed the median and then the southbound lanes and was struck by Ruttle’s vehicle, police said.
After striking the trailer, Ruttle’s Silverado rolled and ended up in the median. Ruttle was wearing his seat belt and suffered a minor cut to his forehead.
The trailer then was struck by a southbound 2006 Ford Focus, which was driven by Guadalupe Lemus, 33, of Council Bluffs. Lemus, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured, police said.
Dennis was ticketed on suspicion of failure to secure his load, police said.
