A newspaper carrier gave Grand Island police an assist early Thursday morning.
Matt Kucera was delivering papers for the Grand Island Independent shortly after 2 a.m. when he heard screaming nearby.
He soon saw a police officer and a dog chasing a suspect, who was running right at him. The officer called for the man to stop.
Kucera, 43, dodged out of the suspect’s way and then grabbed his coat. “We both kind of turned and fell into the street,” Kucera said.
More officers arrived shortly. As they arrested the suspect, they thanked Kucera.
“I just figure it was my duty to do something,” said Kucera, who’s delivered newspapers off and on for five years. He begins each morning at 1:30 and finishes up between 5 and 6.
Police said the suspect was fleeing from a disturbance during which he allegedly entered an apartment and assaulted a man.
