Motorist gets 90 days in jail in 86-year-old pedestrian’s death

HOLDREGE (AP) — A south-central Nebraska woman who was reading a text message while driving has been jailed after running into and killing an 86-year-old pedestrian.

Wednesday, Cattarina Stock, 24, was given 90 days behind bars during a hearing in Phelps County Court in Holdrege. She also was sentenced to two years of probation.

Stock had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular homicide. The charge had been reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor in exchange for her plea.

Authorities say Aldon Thieszen of Holdrege was crossing a street June 28, 2017, when he was hit by Stock’s car.

A Nebraska State Patrol trooper said Stock failed to spot the pedestrian and was distracted by one of a series of text messages she had been exchanging.
