An Omaha police officer returning to the northeast precinct station early Thursday found the body of a man who had been shot to death slumped in a car, authorities said.

It was not clear whether the killing, the 25th in the city this year, occurred in the parking lot outside the station near 30th and Taylor Streets.

The body was found in the driver’s seat of the sedan about 1 a.m.

The victim, whose name and age police had not released early Thursday, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car in which the man was found is registered to a couple who lives near 78th and Blondo Streets. No one answered the phone at the house Thursday morning.

Officers closed a stretch of 30th Street while they probed the slaying.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Wednesday that he has increased patrolling and authorized overtime for street and gang unit officers.

His senior command has held meetings on the uptick in shootings and is working to address the issue.
