Wendell Lee Garrett was born November 17, 1925 to William and Dottie (Compton) Garrett in Steele City, Nebraska. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Steele City, graduating in 1943.
After meeting at a dance in Endicott, and dating for 2 years, Wendell was married to Marian Psota on August 30, 1947 at the Presbyterian Church in Steele City.
Wendell served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953. After basic training in Georgia, he was at Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and Marian was able to join him there where they rented a small bungalow near the base. He was stationed in Korea from September 1952 to November 1953. He was the “old man” of his unit and he was given the nickname Papi.
After his discharge from the Army, Wendell returned to Fairbury and to his job at Barber Furniture where he became well known for his expertise in laying carpet, a job he enjoyed for over 50 years. He was also a handyman and beginning in 1962 he started building the family home on G street where they lived for 49 years.
Wendell and Marian were blessed with two sons; Doyle in April of 1958 and Todd in May of 1963.
During their nearly 64 years of marriage, Wendell and Marian enjoyed camping on family vacations and later traveling together. They also enjoyed horse racing and fishing. They rented an old farm house near Lovewell Lake from 1966 – 1999 where they spent nearly every weekend during the summer with family and friends from Fairbury that also had getaways at the lake.
Wendell had an incredible memory and his family and friends were always amazed by his recollection of events and dates, joking that he could not only remember the year something happened but also the day and hour.
Wendell was a member of the Fairbury Elks, the American Legion Post 24, and the VFW. He was recently named the July 2018 Jefferson County Veteran of the Month and was awarded a Certificate of Continuous Membership for 50 years from the American Legion Post 24.
