Sherrie M. Thomas Brandenburg, 76 of Fairbury, passed away February 9, 2018 in Lincoln, NE. She was born April 13, 1941 to Verril and Eleanor (May) Thomas at Hebron, NE.
Sherrie attended elementary schools at Reynolds, and rural Jefferson County. She was a 4-H and church youth group member. She graduated from Fairbury High School in 1958 where she was a member of several school organizations, including National Honor Society and Student Council.
In September 1958 she enrolled at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Home Economics Education in 1962. While there, her two residences were Fedde Hall Dorm and AOPi Sorority House.
Her first teaching job was in Exeter, NE. She and Jerry were married August 3, 1963 in Fairbury and lived in Lincoln. She was employed as a drapery sales consultant for Sears while Jerry finished his last semester at UNL. His first job took them to Niagara Falls, NY where Sherrie substitute taught. Their next locations were Columbus and Norfolk, NE where she taught fulltime at Shelby and Norfolk Senior High. She completed her Master of Science Degree at this time and was head of the department and supervised student teachers for UNL. They next located in Elkhorn and Beatrice, NE where she was a fulltime Mother to their three children and a church and community volunteer. They then moved to their home of nearly forty years near Fairbury and Sherrie returned to teaching. She retired from Meridian Public Schools in 2005 with approximately 25 combined years of substituting and fulltime teaching.
In retirement she kept busy with church, professional and community organizations and spending time with friends and family. She and Jerry enjoyed many travels at home and abroad.
Surviving her are her husband Jerry, children Becky Morris and her children Bailey and Dominic, Barton (Erin) Brandenburg and their children Emerson and Hadley, Brady Brandenburg, brothers Gene (Susan) Thomas and Ted Thomas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 11:00 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Fairbury with Father John Birkel officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Fairbury Cemetery. A rosary will be Wednesday February 14, 2018 at 6:30 at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury, with family greeting friends afterwards. Memorials are to St. Michael’s Church or NE Cancer Society. Cremation, No viewing. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
