Shannon J. Hazen, 91, of Beatrice formerly of Sterling died Friday afternoon, February 9, 2018 at the Beatrice Good Samaritan Center. He was born on March 26, 1926 at Cook and graduated from Brock High School. He farmed and did mechanical work until his marriage to Erma Wehmer on September 26, 1948 and they moved to Sterling in 1949. He worked for John Deere Implement in Sterling, Doc Juilfs and Vic Schmidt at the Ferguson dealership and in 1952, started Hazen’s Repair. He and Erma operated Hazen’s Apco from 1969 until 1977. After the station was sold, they started and operated Hazen’s Green Acres from 1977 to 1993. They were an independent agent for The Lutheran Digest for several years. Shannon was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling where he had served as an usher and had been on the church council for three terms. He was a volunteer for the Sterling Fire Department for over 20 years, served on the Sterling Town Board several times, was active in the Sterling Bicentennial, was a 4-H leader, a member of the Sterling Community Association and the Sterling Improvement Association. They moved to Arbor Meadows in Beatrice in 2014.
Survivors include his wife, Erma of Beatrice; son, Vernon (Jeanine) Hazen of Sterling; daughter, Eldonna Hazen (Cathy Noth) of Madison, WI; seven grandchildren, Greg (Megan) Hazen and Kirk (Natalie) Hazen all of Lincoln, Michael (Cheryl) Hazen of Lake St. Louis, MO, Jonathan (Tina) Hazen of Sterling, Spencer Noth-Hazen, Aiden Noth-Hazen, and Carlyn Noth-Hazen all of Madison, WI; eight great-grandchildren, Kasey and Kye Hazen and Kensington and Graham Hazen all of Lincoln, Noah and Madison Hazen of Lake St. Louis, MO and Blake and Clayton Hazen of Sterling; one brother, Milo Hazen of Lincoln; two sisters, Virginia Schlender of Pawnee City and Judy McAlexander of Brownville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Fay Carman Hazen; parents-in-law, George and Edna Wehmer; brothers-in-law, Leonard Wright, Harold Schlender, and Lawrence Wehmer; sister-in-law, Betty Wehmer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Burial will be at the Sterling Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. Tuesday in the fellowship room of the church. A memorial has been established to St. John Lutheran Sunday School in Sterling and the Sterling High School Music Department with Wilma Nieveen in charge. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice on Sunday from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M., then the Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling on Sunday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Monday from 8:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M.
