Bob’s Journey – began on December 8, 1934 on a farm near Plymouth NE where he was the 9th of 10 children born to John & Adela Meyer Freese. Robert Raymond was born on the 12th Birthday of his sister Hilda, which created a special bond between this brother and sister.
Bob has strived for the goal of Eternal Life with our Heavenly Father through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was washed in the water of Baptism at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Plymouth NE on Christmas Day in 1934. And continued growing his Faith by attending St. Paul’s Parochial School from the 5th through 8th Grade. Achieving his religious study he then was Confirmed in May of 1948. Bob continued to grow his faith throughout his 83 years being an active member of St. Paul’s, Trinity Lutheran Church, Jansen NE and having membership at Grace Lutheran Church at the time of his death. He has helped spread the Good News of Jesus Christ as he has held offices in the various churches and assisted in Sunday School activities over the many years. Family gatherings have allowed Bob the opportunity to share his faith through mealtime prayers.
School Days found Bob attending rural school District #76 for the first four years. He completed his elementary education at St. Paul’s Parochial School and graduated in 1952 from Plymouth High School. While at Plymouth High he participated in football, basketball, and band. His sports highlight was being the center for the Plymouth High School Basketball team when they went to the State Basketball Tournament in 1952.
Following his graduation Bob lived his passion and that was farming. It was not a job it was his way of life. He cared about the land he farmed and would always strive to improve it and develop it so that it was better than when it was entrusted to his care. Bob farmed in the Jansen and Fairbury area until his retirement in 2003. He was active in leadership by serving as a board member of several Co-op organizations. He dearly enjoyed the working relationship he had with his brothers as they worked together during the fall harvest. Straight rows – Yes! Living on highway 136 those straight rows were very important to Bob and so his rows were always straight!
Bob served our country as a member of the Nebraska National Guard from 1952 – 1957 and then in the US Army Reserve in 1958. Bob also served on the Jansen School Board and was a director for the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co/Western United Mutual of Wilber from 1967-2012.
Bob married Berniece Dorn in 1956 and they had 4 daughters – Vicki, Suzy, Bobbi, and Sandi. They lived on a farm near Jansen and while the girls were growing up they enjoyed camping, boating and water skiing whenever a break could be taken from the farm.
In 1984 Bob married Clara Jean Vance Gerdes and they stayed on the farm until retirement when they moved to a home in Fairbury Nebraska. Their 34 years of marriage was filled with many wonderful shared activities. Snow skiing, hunting, many years of deep sea fishing and spending time with family and friends filled his life with great memories. And then Bob’s Journey took another turn in 2009 when he and CJ bought a Winter home in Phoenix AZ. Bob loved his AZ time though his AZ farming turned to planting succulents and cacti. He enjoyed the mild winter temperatures and this experience opened doors to more wonderful times and new wonderful friendships.
Returning from AZ in the spring of 2018, Bob’s journey made him face new challenges. On September 13, 2018 just 11 weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer Bob made his Journey to his Glorious Heavenly Home at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 5 days. He has reached his Ultimate Goal!
