Ralph H. Walker, 101, passed away at Homestead House on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
He was born August 30, 1916 at Pawnee City and graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1934. He attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO and then farmed at Pawnee City until moving to Beatrice in 1948. He worked at Store Kraft from 1948 – 1981 as an assemblyman. He married Hazel Warren on December 31, 1950 in Beatrice. They cared for Linda’s children Richard, now of Takoma Park, MD and Lucinda Schmechel Kaul of Glide, OR when they were youngsters. He and Hazel were active members of Trinity Lutheran Church of Beatrice until it closed, then he joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He was also a member of F.O.E. Post #531 and Masonic Lodge #26 both of Beatrice. Ralph will be remembered as a quiet man who took pride in his woodworking skills, made gifts for others in his home workshop on North 8th Street in Beatrice. In the 1950’s – 1960’s, he and Hazel spent weekends in their camper with local boating club. Ralph remained mentally sharp until the day he died. He looked forward to watching the Triple Crown horse races each year, loved to have breakfast at Aunt Mary’s Restaurant, and discuss economics and local happenings with friend Bruce Kirstein, who often visited from Nevada. He lived at Arbor Manor then Homestead House for the last 20 yrs.
Survivors include nieces, Linda Kuhl Schmechel and Diane Warren Albert. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Templeton Walker; his wife Hazel, who died January 15, 1998; one brother.
There will be no services. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice from 12:00 noon to 9:00 P.M. Sunday, June 17, 2018. Private burial will take place in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. www.foxfuneralhome.net
