Maxine Marie Martin, also lovingly known as “Mema”, age 82, passed away on February 9, 2019, at Heritage Care Center of Fairbury.

She was born in Diller, Nebraska, on April 14, 1936, to Josiah and Vera (Kelly) Rogers. She was the youngest of three children, and was well-protected by her two older brothers.

Maxine attended and graduated from school in Endicott, NE. She received her teacher’s certificate from Union College, in Lincoln, NE.

She married Melburn Michael “Mike” Martin on October 5, 1958, in Fairbury, NE, and they had two wonderful sons, Michael and Mitchel. She loved her boys very much and was always proud to share stories about them.

Even though she kept busy with her family and her teaching career, she had a passion for other things, as well. She spoke on the local radio show many times. Later on, she regularly contributed a column to the Fairbury Journal-News, titled “As I See It”, which was a delightful combination of humor and life. She received a lot of cards and letters from people, telling her how much they enjoyed reading her column. One of her biggest passions was cooking, and she captivated the taste buds of her family and friends with the many delectable dishes and treats she prepared over the years. She loved cooking so much, that she opened and ran a successful restaurant, The Sober Cowboy, in Endicott, for several years.

Maxine had many, many friends over the years, and each one was very special to her. Her furry friend, Sassy, faithfully kept watch on her master for the last 17 years of her life.

A member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Maxine loved God and believed in Him. The second coming of the Lord was a promise she always held in her heart.

Maxine leaves to cherish her loving memory, her son, Mitchel, his wife, Marla, and their four children, Mason, Mattson, Michaela, and Marcus, and great-grandson, Michael “MJ” Martin Lee, all of Crete, NE; grandchildren, Blake, Brett, and Bailey Martin, Barry Tompkins, and great-granddaughter, Riley, all of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law; siblings Doyle and Leroy ; son, Michael Monroe “Roe”; and husband, Melburn Michael “Mike” Martin.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019, at the Fairbury Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Fairbury, NE. Following the service, family and friends are welcome to a gathering with refreshments.
