Herbert “Herb” Henry Hartwig, 98, of Beatrice NE, formerly of Diller NE, was born on October 28, 1919 to Henry and Tena (Ubben) Hartwig in rural Gage County, Nebraska He entered into eternal rest on October 14, 2018. He attended country school close to his boyhood home near Barneston NE through the eighth grade. He graduated from Barneston High School in 1937. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Harbine NE, where he was united in marriage to Elsie Johanna Meyer on Aug. 15, 1943. He has been a member ever since and, along with Elsie, were anniversary committee members for the church’s centennial in 2001. He had been a farmer his entire life. In his younger days he would travel to neighboring states including Iowa, South Dakota, and Colorado with harvesting crews; harvesting corn, wheat, rye, and potatoes. He traveled west after harvest where he was witness to Mount Rushmore with only three president faces completed and San Francisco before the Golden Gate Bridge. He visited the Golden Gate International Exposition (Worlds Fair) in California in 1939. He lived on a farm north of Diller until he moved to Beatrice 4 years ago. He enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, family, children, grand and great-grandchildren.
Herb is survived by a son, Kenneth (Kendra) Hartwig of Lincoln NE; and by a daughter, Kathie Hartwig Menck of Beatrice NE. He is also survived by the children of Ken and Kendra; Brendelyn (Brandon Koll) Beck of Waverly NE; Meghan (Robert) Frickel, Erin (Freeman) Sandquist, and Andrew Hartwig, all of Lincoln NE; by Kathie’s daughters, Jessie and Robin Menck, both of Omaha NE; and Myron’s son, Benjamin (Heather) Hartwig of Hazel Green AL.; and by great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Justin, and Ian Beck; Teagan and Amelia Koll; Luna, Conor, and Avalon Frickel; Lily, Ray, Georgia, and Jack Sandquist, Derek, Zach, and Xander Hartwig; by one sister-in-law Phyllis Coyle of Loveland, CO. and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death my his wife, Elsie (Meyer) Hartwig on December 3, 2010, his son, Myron Hartwig, his parents Henry and Tena and three brothers, Maynard, Charles, and Howard Hartwig.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church, Harbine NE with Pastor Matthew Koterba officiating, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. in the church basement. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 N. 9th St, Wymore from 1 to 8 p.m. with his family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and at the church one hour preceding the service.
