Emmett H. Carnes, Jr., “Jay”, 74 was born at “the old Lutheran hospital” in Beatrice on July 28, 1944 to Emmett, Sr. and Rosina (Paben) Carnes. Jay rested in the loving arms of his Savior on September 21, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in Beatrice. He attended grade school at Fairbury and District 56 at rural Cortland and graduated from Cortland High School in 1962. Jay received a degree in Diesel Mechanics from Milford Technical School. On August 2, 1969, he married Brenda Schwab at Plymouth. They were blessed with three daughters, Jill, Amanda and Ellen. His conscientious work ethic was always evident. He started working for Behren’s Construction Co. while in upper elementary school. He continued to work at Behrens through high school and on weekends while in college. After many years at Behrens, Jay worked for the following companies: Case Power and Equipment, Natural Gas Pipeline, Beatrice Concrete and Agrium until his retirement. While still working for Agrium, Jay and Brenda opened Soap Opera Laundry and Tanning. In later years, he worked part-time as the maintenance technician at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. As an adult, he served on the church council and was an usher. Appreciating what the Lord has done for him; it was important that his family worshipped together regularly. Jay was a reserved quiet man. He was there for his parents, family and friends as needed. Jay received many plaques with “Perfect Attendance” embossed on them from the companies he worked for. He enjoyed seeing his daughters and grandchildren accomplishments, collecting toy tractors, pennies and half dollars. He is now at peace after sustaining a traumatic head injury on October 7, 1969. He was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) in early 2015 which slowly took away many physical capabilities.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Carnes; three daughters, Jill Toland and husband Danny, Amanda Kuhlman and husband Matthew, and Ellen Cillessen and husband Ryan; grandchildren, Cody and Brielle Toland, Hayley and Skyler Kuhlman; two sisters, Viola Koperski and Linda Bartlett and husband Harold; brother-in-law, Bradley Schwab and wife Patti; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Rosina; one granddaughter, Abbigayle Toland; brother, Archie Carnes; parents-in-law, Harry and Helen Schwab; brother-in-law, Paul Koperski.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at St. John Lutheran Church of Beatrice with Pastor Greg Gabriel officiating. Following the service, the body will be cremated and a private family inurnment of the cremains will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. in the church chapel on Tuesday. A memorial has been established to St. John Lutheran Church with Verneta and Lamar Schmidt and Janet and Bill Waltz in charge. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice from 11:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M.
