Betty J. Brecht, 92, died at her home on Monday, November 6, 2017. She was born on July 23, 1925 in McCook and lived on a farm near Culbertson. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1943 and went to work at the McCook Army Air Base Hospital during World War II. She married Reynold Brecht in 1949 and they lived in Superior until 1954 when they moved to Beatrice. Besides helping Rey with his hog buying business, she was part-owner of the Root Cellar from 1977 to 1989. She was a long-time member of the Centenary Methodist Church of Beatrice. She worked and volunteered at the Beatrice Mary YMCA for 5 years and was on the Board of Directors. During all of these years she was a good golfer and member of the Beatrice Country Club. As a member of Blue Birds of Nebraska, she was very active in monitoring and keeping track of the fledging Blue Birds every summer since 1986.
Survivors include her daughter and caregiver, Vicki Lau of Beatrice; one grandson, Brian Sweetser and wife Kim of Doniphan; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Jack; a former daughter-in-law, Pam Brecht Stierwalt and husband Bud; two nieces Diane Frick Koetter and husband Smitty of Downs, Kansas and Peggy Snyder and husband Jim of Pittsberg Kansas; many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Marie Rienek Frick; her husband Reynold (Rey) who died in 1986; her son, Larry who died in 2007; two sisters and two brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 11. 2017 at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice with Chaplain Sharon Schuster officiating. There will be no viewing as the body has been cremated. There will be no inurnment. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Beatrice Humane Society. A guestbook for signatures will be available at the Fox Funeral Home from 8:00 A.M.
