Bernice R. Carstens, 94 years of age, of Beatrice passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital Tuesday evening, February 13, 2018. She was born on November 17, 1923 in Burchard, NE to Carl and Lydia (Boehmer) Rinne. Bernice graduated from Beatrice High School in 1941, and attended Peru State Teachers College. She taught at a country school in rural Gage County where she met George Carstens, and they were married on January 23, 1944 in Beatrice. During World War II, Bernice worked at Dempsters and drove an ambulance at Fort Riley, KS where George was stationed. She stayed at home to raise their family, and then had worked at Tempo, and Klippenstein Ace Hardware. Bernice was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Beatrice and had taught Sunday school; and was involved in the Gage County Extension Club, Garden Club, and her neighborhood Arts and Crafts Club. She enjoyed gardening and canning, sewing, and cooking for her family.

Survivors include 5 daughters; Linda Bird (Larry) of Albion, NE, Mary Larsen of Fremont, Julie Edell of Chapel Hill, NC, Lori Depue’ (Ron) of Grand Island, NE and Patti Ideus (Wayne) of Basehor, KS; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George M. Carstens (2001); brothers Kenneth and Orville Rinne; and sons in law Alan Edell and Frank Larsen Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, February 16, 2018 at the First Christian Church with Pastor David Bigley officiating. Interment at Evergreen Home Cemetery. The body will lie in state 1-8:00 PM Thursday and 9-11:00 AM Friday at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice and at the church one hour preceding the service. A family prayer service will be at 1:45 PM Friday at the church. Memorial to the church and the Susan G. Komen Foundation (For The Cure) with the funeral home in charge.
