Bernice Marie (Schenk) Harms, 94 of Fairbury passed away April 14, 2018 in Fairbury. She was born January 16, 1924 to E. J. & Marie (Junker) Schenk at Diller.
She was baptized October 25, 1925 in the Presbyterian Church Fairbury.
Bernice’s mother died when she was 3 years old. Her maternal grandparents, Henry & Adelina Junker took her and her brother, William, to live with them.
She attended schools in Fairbury and graduated in 1942 from Fairbury High – then attended the Fairbury Jr. College. She later worked at Hested Offices and then Western Electric in accounting during WWII in Lincoln, NE. She did accounting at Reynolds Co-op, and she also worked at Jefferson County Treasurers office and Veterans Service in Fairbury.
On March 2, 1947 she married Wilber (Bill) Harms and to this union 4 children were born, Janette Marie, Sheila Ann, Michael John and Mary Ann. They lived on a farm near Gladstone and later moved to one near Reynolds. They moved to Fairbury in 1972 and lived here until her death.
They first joined Trinity Lutheran Church of Gladstone. She was confirmed there on January 15, 1950. They joined Grace Lutheran of Fairbury in 1965 where she was active in Ladies Aid & LWML, the funeral committee, quilting and also served as a teacher in Sunday school and Bible School.
Surviving are her children Sheila of Lincoln, Mike of Fairbury & Mary of Lincoln and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wilber (Bill) Harms, daughter Janette, brother William Schenk, parents E. J. & Marie Schenk and grandparents Henry and Adelina Junker.
Services will be Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairbury with Pastor Charles Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in Grace Lutheran Cemetery – Gladstone. Memorials will go to Grace Lutheran Church. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home in Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
