Anton J. “Tony” Gerdes, 81, of Sterling died at Gold Crest Retirement Center on Thursday morning, November 9, 2017. He was born January 16, 1936 at rural Sterling and attended Sterling Public Schools. He married Sharon Rockenbach on October 21, 1967 in Denver, CO and they lived in Sterling. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling. He farmed for many years, drove a propane truck and charter buses.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Sterling; three sons, Marvin Gerdes of Redlands, CA, Perry (Darlene) Gerdes of Yucaipa, CA and Jeffrey Gerdes of Gladstone, MO; one daughter, Jennifer Gerdes of Sterling; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Gerdes, Taylor Gerdes, Colton Gerdes, Kevan Gerdes, Caitlyn Gerdes, Ethan Gerdes and Mason Gee; 1 great granddaughter, Brighton Gerdes; two sisters-in-law, Gail Rockenbach of Lincoln and Melanie (Jon) Bunnett of Olathe, KS; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Paula Schiele Gerdes; infant daughter; parents-in-law, Dale and Pearl Rockenbach; one brother, John “Hans” Gerdes; two sisters Frieda (Dale) Bird and Anna (Art) Donner; infant sister, Hedwig Gerdes.
Memorial graveside services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Sterling Cemetery with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Guest book will be available Sunday noon to 5 PM at Zink-Fox funeral Home. The body has been cremated. There will be no viewing.
