Havel, Welch push Titans past Trojans
DE WITT, NE – Thayer Central (13-6) had a frustrating week last week.
After losing to Centennial at home on Jan. 25, they turned around and lost to the Broncos again in Utica four days later.
This week is off to a better start. The Titans forced 29 turnovers on their way to a dominating 61-30 win over Tri County (10-13) on Monday night in De Witt.
Thayer Central was led in scoring by junior guard Sydny Havel, who scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the first half.
Senior forward Emily Welch finished with 11 points. In total, all five of the Titans’ starters finished with at least four points. Thayer Central also got 15 bench points. Those efforts were led by junior Bailey Kiburz, who dropped a season-high nine points.
Tri County, who had won three of its last four coming in, was led in scoring by senior and Doane track commit Madison Freese. She ended up with seven points and five rebounds unofficially.
Junior forward Hannah Strein had six points. Sophomore forward Alyssa Brown tied her season-high with five points off the bench.
The Trojans ended up with 10 bench points, but eight turnovers in the first quarter buried them early, 17-5 at the end of the first.
Tri County boys finish with four double-digit scorers in rout of Thayer Central
Just another day at the office for Tri County (17-4) on Monday.
The No. 9 Trojans, after absorbing some early three-pointers from Thayer Central (2-15), ended the first half on a 12-3 run on their way to an 82-38 shellacking of the short-handed Titans.
Tri County, who finished 3rd on Saturday in the Pioneer Conference tournament, scored 80-plus for the second straight game and the fifth time this season.
Senior guard Creighton Niemeyer, who eclipsed 1,000 career points less than three weeks ago, now has over 1,100 after scoring a game-high 22 on Monday.
Along with his large amounts of points, Niemeyer now has over 600 rebounds and roughly 300 assists and steals in his illustrious career. The senior was honored before Monday’s game with a commemorative plaque and basketball net.
Sophomores Cole Siems and Lucas Weise each finished with 14 points Monday, while senior Evan Larson racked up 10 points – all in the first half.
Thayer Central fought hard early, knocking down four three-pointers before halftime and trailing only 29-20 midway through the second quarter. Tri County’s scoring barrage was too much to overcome, however as the Trojans led 41-23 at the break.
The Titans were led Monday by senior Taylor Koss, who dropped 14 points. Sophomore Brennan Harms had 11.
Thayer Central took its fifth straight loss Monday, and have struggled ever since senior Keith Hergott was ruled out for the season several weeks ago with a torn ACL.
Through the Titans’ first seven games, Hergott had been averaging 9.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.
Tri County stays home Friday to host Pioneer Conference foe Sterling. Thayer Central is home to Doniphan-Trumbull on Tuesday before traveling to Southern on Friday.
