HEBRON – The Thayer Central girls basketball team held off a second half rally to beat Southern 30-26 on Friday.
Both teams played tough defense in a low-scoring game with Thayer Central up by eight at halftime. Southern was able to chip away in the second half and gradually close the gap, tying the game at 26 in the final minutes.
They weren’t able to take the lead though as Thayer Central got a basket from Grace Souerdyke to go back in front. Jenna Cottam then made two free throws to seal the win on her senior night.
Cottam led the Titans with 10 points in the game. Southern was paced by 12 from Kambree Singleton. The two teams will meet again Monday in Fairbury for the first round of subdistricts.
The boys game started low scoring, but Southern was able to pull away to win 61-44.
Thayer Central held a 9-8 lead after the first quarter after a 35-foot buzzer beater by Gabe Haase to end the period. Southern responded by starting the second on a 14-0 run to open a double digit lead and never looked back. The margin would grow to as much as 25 in the second half.
Drake Adams led three Raiders in double figures, posting a double double in the first half on his way to finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Carson Borzekofski added 15 points and Trevin Saathoff had 14. Max Madsen led Thayer Central with 14 points.
