Class B

Arlington

Coach: Rusty Hilgenkamp, 3rd year. 2017: 16-7, state qualifier.

Returning starters — Seniors: Jackson Borgmann, INF; Clayton Koch, P/OF; Jake Vogt, P/OF.

Outlook: The Eagles graduated nine from last year’s state tourney team; young players will get the opportunity to contribute.

Auburn

Coach: Mike Henrichs, 3rd year. 2017: 3-13.

Returning starters — Seniors: John Kinamman, INF/P; Noah Wynn, P/UTIL; Zach Dickerson, P/UTIL. Juniors: Branden Lavigne, OF; Seth Zimmerman, OF/P. Sophomores: Kyson Warner, C.

Outlook: A young but talented team that hopes to improve as the season progresses.

Beatrice

Coach: Chris Belding, 1st year. 2017: 9-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Nolan White, P/C; Caleb Wallman, P/3B; Kole Jurgens, 1B. Juniors: Zach Hoffman, P/3B; Griffen Vater, P/SS.

Outlook: The Orangemen will be a work in progress for new coach Belding, the school’s fourth baseball coach in four years.

Bennington

Coach: Scott Heese, 9th year. 2017: 10-11.

Returning starters — Seniors: Jacob Wageman, SS; Grant Carl, P/OF; Mitch in den Bosch, P/1B; Zach Wullenwaber, C; Cole Schumacher, P/1B; Caden Rodriguez, P/INF; Colin Bencker, 2B; Alex Breazile, OF; Jacob Gillen, OF. Juniors: Cooper Prososki, P/CF.

Outlook: The Badgers return several starters and hope to make a run at the school’s first state tourney appearance since 2014.

Blair

Coach: Mike O’Kane, 2nd year. 2017: 13-10, state qualifier.

Returning starters — Seniors: Jake MacDonald, P/3B. Juniors: AJ Bilslend, INF. Sophomores: Auggie Rasmussen, SS/CF.

Outlook: Bears will be young, graduating nine seniors from last year’s state tournament team.

Central City/Fullerton

Coach: Brandon Detletsen, 1st year. First year of program.

Returning starters — None. Seniors: Dale Jones, P/INF; Mike Murray, SS/INF; Tucker Schneirdeinz, OF; Chase Dettman, C/INF; Hunter Friend, C/OF.

Outlook: The new program has just five seniors but several underclassmen have American Legion experience from the summer.

Crete

Coach: Jeremy Fries, 7th year. 2017: 8-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Blake Feeken, SS; Carter Kent, 1B; Ethan Mach, 3B/OF; Logan Adam, CF; Jordan Owens, INF. Juniors: AJ Page, C; Dillon Feeken, INF.

Outlook: Cardinals have nine seniors but have to boost their hitting — .262 as a team last season — to show improvement.

Douglas County West

Coach: Trey Baker, 2nd year. 2017: 2-14.

Returning starters — Seniors: Anderson Graham, SS/P; Brock Renter, P/SS; Trevor Wald, 3B; Caden Hays, OF/P; Jake O’Connor, INF/OF; Chad Carlson, C/OF.

Outlook: The Falcons hope to minimize mistakes and capitalize on small-ball opportunities to take a step forward.

Elkhorn

Coach: Kyle McCright, 3rd year. 2017: 18-12, state qualifier.

Returning starters — Seniors: Matt Hotovy, CF; Zach Headley, P/UTIL. Sophomores: Trey Frahm, SS/P.

Outlook: The Antlers graduated nine from last year’s state tourney team but should once again be a factor.

Elkhorn Mount Michael

Coach: Michael Hagge, 4th year. 2017: 11-14.

Returning starters — Seniors: Garrett Gloeb, 1B; Keyton Pappas, 2B; Nick Lorensen, OF; Blake Worsham, P/C; Sam Allesandro, OF. Juniors: Sid DeMayo, C; Patrick Collins, P/OF.

Outlook: The Knights will count on their pitching to help overcome the graduation of a strong senior class.

Fort Calhoun

Coach: Roy Prauner, 7th year. 2017: 3-13.

Returning starters — Seniors: Jame Warner; Connor Linnenbrink; Gatt Ware, Zach Imig. Juniors: Nate Premer.

Outlook: Pioneers must overcome the graduation of several pitchers.

Gretna

Coach: Jake Wolf, 8th year. 2017: 21-9, state qualifier.

Returning starters — Seniors: Caleb French, SS; Brody Riecken, CF/P; Tanner Tierney, C.

Outlook: Depth and athleticism should be strengths for the Dragons, who have reached state the past two years.

Hastings

Coach: Blake Marquardt, 2nd year. 2017: 10-6.

Returning starters — Seniors: Cameron Edwards, 3B; Connor Laux, SS; JT Cafferty, C; Josh Brooks, OF; Mike Boeve, INF; Tyson Gatto, P; Tyson Bonham, 2B.

Outlook: The Tigers were respectable last season and could be even better this year with the presence of nine seniors.

Nebraska City

Coach: Kyle Ferguson, 1st year. 2017: 11-7.

Returning starters — Seniors: Garrett Bassinger, P/1B; Jace Becker, CF; Dylan Knoell, C/OF. Juniors: Trent Fahey, LF.

Outlook: New coach Ferguson takes over for longtime coach Tom Bales; Pioneers are optimistic after a strong Legion season.

Omaha Concordia/Omaha Brownell-Talbot

Coach: Dan Kraft, 5th year. 2017: 12-7.

Returning starters — Seniors: Buck Leinen, P/1B; Jacob Headley, 2B; Ryan Ehresman, INF/OF; Damon Kissell, P/1B. Juniors: Noah Jones, P/OF; Coleton Kanzmeier, P/INF; Grant Meyer, C.

Outlook: The return of several varsity players helps fuel optimism for the Mustangs.

Omaha Gross

Coach: Mike Filipowicz, 29th year. 2017: 6-20.

Returning starters — Seniors: Brendan Chonis, P/INF; Zach Griger, INF/P; Connor Weis, OF. Juniors: Ben Deiber, P/INF.

Outlook: Cougars return four starters to form the nucleus for Filipowicz, the dean of Nebraska high school baseball coaches in his 29th season.

Omaha Roncalli

Coach: Jake Hoover, 4th year. 2017: 10-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Creighton Silvain, P/2B; Tommy Alitz, P/3B; Logan McGill, P/1B; Noah Rheinheimer, C; Nate Gorczyca, P/OF; Max Anderson, INF/OF. Juniors: Alex Rodgers, INF/OF; Justin Niederle, OF.

Outlook: Optimism abounds for the Crimson Pride, who graduated just two players off last summer’s Class B American Legion state championship squad.

Platte Valley

Coach: Shawn Emanuel, 3rd year. 2017: 8-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Zach Banks, 2B; Clayton Allington, 1B. Juniors: Hayden Hanna, P/OF; Clayton Nelson, P/OF. Sophomores: Brayden Whitehead, P/OF; Hunter Washburn, P/SS.

Outlook: Pitching should be a strong point, and that’s never a bad thing.

Platteview

Coach: Bryan Dutcher, 5th year. 2017: 11-9.

Returning starters — Seniors: Colin Lynam, RF; Cade Lynam, CF; Ryan Roesler, 3B/P; Grant Kelley, C/DH. Juniors: Caden Mathewson, SS; Jordan Mathewson, 2B.

Outlook: The Trojans have talent at several positions and should be strong defensively.

Plattsmouth

Coach: Jim Olsen, 6th year. 2017: 5-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Josh Aho, C; Draven Ray, P/1B; Kirkland Haswell, OF. Juniors: Dylan Mayfield, SS; Tucker Anderson, P/1B; Nathan Konkler, OF. Sophomores: Connor Pohlmeier, 2B; Jack Glup, P/OF.

Outlook: The Blue Devils are hoping to see benefits from the select feeder programs that began four years ago.

South Sioux City

Coach: Jared Small, 3rd year. 2017: 11-10.

Returning starters — None.

Outlook: The Cardinals graduated 12 seniors from last year so younger players will be called on immediately.

Wahoo/Lincoln Lutheran/Wahoo Neumann

Coach: Kyle Weyers, 4th year. 2017: 15-7.

Returning starters — Seniors: Billy Hancock, C; Cameron Quick, P/OF; Kasey Ohnoutka, SS; Tucker Hancock, OF; Chase Stebbing, P/UTIL. Juniors: Karson Hesser, P/UTIL; Nick Oden, P/UTIL.

Outlook: The addition of Wahoo Neumann to an already competitive squad should help this team become even better.

Waverly

Coach: Kyle Parker, 3rd year. 2017: 11-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Rylan Gubbels, CF. Juniors: Thatcher Kozal, C/OF; Rhett Jordon, P/UTIL; Jonah Reiser, P/UTIL; Jay Adams, P/INF; Nolan Brown, P/INF.

Outlook: The Vikings will count on a strong junior class and senior Gubbels, an All-Class B selection last year.

Wayne

Coach: Adam Hoffman, 7th year. 2017: 6-12.

Returning starters — Seniors: Zane Jackson, P/C; Brennen O’Reilly, P/OF. Juniors: Tyler Gilliland, P/INF. Sophomores: Hagan Miller, INF; Trevor DeBoer, P/INF.

Outlook: The Blue Devils will count heavily on their young players to take another step forward this season.
