LINCOLN – The Norris baseball team has to settle for runner up after falling to Omaha Skutt 6-3 in a 12 inning marathon for the Class B State Championship.
Norris got out to an early lead when Austin Schultz tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning then scored on a double by Drew Reetz. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Skutt was able to load the bases and bring home the tying run on a fielder’s choice.
Zach Argo was solid pitching for Norris before the NSAA’s pitch limit forced him from the tied game with two out in the seventh. In 6 2/3 innings he allowed just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out 10.
The score stayed knotted at 1-1 all the way into the ninth inning when a walk and three singles allowed Skutt to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half Norris got a single and two walks to load the bases to set up an RBI single by Cade Kohout and a sacrifice fly by Jesse Brown to tie the game at three.
The deadlock continued until the top of the 12th, when Skutt pushed across three runs. Norris went three up and three down in the bottom half to end the game.
Two Omaha Skutt pitchers combined to hold Norris to five hits and two walks while Norris pitchers gave up 10 hits and seven walks. The Titans were led at the plate by Schultz, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Omaha Skutt claims its first baseball state championship in school history. For Norris it’s the second runner-up finish in the last three years.
