LINCOLN – Despite a valiant effort Norris came up just short in the state championship.
After defeating Skutt Catholic 9-8 earlier in the tournament the two teams clashed in a rematch, but this time the Skyhawks edged the Titans 6-3 in a 12-inning thriller.
“It’s tough to talk to them after a game like that,” Norris Head Coach Sean Bartholomew shared. “I’m so proud of the way they competed. The main thing I said to take away from this is to use it for motivation for next year. We got a lot of guys returning back and we don’t want to be on that end of the dog pile this next year.”
Norris got on the board first with Austin Schultz scoring off of a Drew Reetz double, but Skutt would get one back in the top of the fifth to tie things 1-1.
The game would go into extra innings and Skutt would bring home two in the top of the ninth to take a 3-1 lead. The Titans didn’t lay down and answered back in the bottom of the inning. A Cade Kohout single, with one down, would bring Shultz home, and then a Jesse Brown sacrifice fly plated Logan McDonald. Norris had Will Reetz on third with two down but were unable to capitalize.
After two more scoreless innings Skutt would plate three in the top of the 12th inning and go on for the win. While he was disappointed in the defeat, Bartholomew said the resiliency his team showed was a testament to their character.
“That’s just the way we’ve been all season. We’ve competed well. Our guys battle, and we expect nothing less out of our guys. Skutt is just a great team and we just didn’t excuse at the end when it mattered most.”
Zach Argo got the start on the mound and pitch 6 2/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 10 and walking 3. Tyler Ruhl pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief, conceding 5 runs on 6 hits, striking out 4 and walking 5.
