Comments: Loaded. That’s the only way to describe Prep, which starts the season on top. The Junior Jays return 11 starters from last year’s runner-up team, including All-Nebraska captain Ed Gordon. A roster that includes 15 seniors has been around the Class A block. Tests come early and often, though. Prep could have five matches against ranked foes before the season’s 10th day is over. Westside, which starts at No. 2, brings back its share of talent, too. The Warriors fell in last year’s semifinals to eventual champion Omaha South. Parity reigns amongst the state’s other contenders.

CLASS B

1. Elkhorn South, 18-1, 2

2. South Sioux City, 14-6, NR (A)

3. Columbus Scotus, 17-3, 1

4. Columbus, 16-4, 3

5. Lexington, 11-9, 7

6. Omaha Skutt, 9-9, 8

7. Schuyler, 14-6, 4

8. Elkhorn, 11-7, 6

9. Gretna, 6-9, NR

10. Ralston, 9-9, NR

Comments: There should be no lack of offense or motivation for Elkhorn South. The Storm bring back a trio of double-digit scorers from last year’s runner-up team. South conceded a goal in the final 30 seconds of the 2016 final in a 1-0 loss to three-time defending champion Columbus Scotus. The Shamrocks graduated a huge class and return just two starters. South Sioux City is back in Class B after three seasons in Class A, including a state semifinal appearance in 2014. A full slate of top-end matches early in the season should provide some early insight. Saturday tournaments at Scotus and Skutt feature ratings showdowns, with a handful of others on tap for next week.
