FAIRBURY – The Meridian volleyball team will play for a district title on Thursday after winning a five set thriller over Bruning-Davenport/Shickley in the D1-2 Subdistrict on Monday.
Both teams cruised through their first round matches with Meridian knocking off Deshler 3-0 while BDS dispatched Lawrence-Nelson 3-0.
BDS came out hot in the matchup, to win the first set 25-23 against a Meridian squad that had only dropped five sets all season before the matchup. The Mustangs responded by controlling the next two sets 25-15 and 25-10. BDS bounced back to take the fourth 25-21 and force a decisive fifth set, which Meridian won 15-12.
Rylee Pieper led Meridian with 12 kills in the match while Halle Pribyl added nine. Jadyn Kleinschmidt had 13 kills for BDS.
The loss drops BDS to 26-5 on the season. They will likely receive a wild card for next week’s state tournament.
Meridian improves to 29-1 and will play in the district final Thursday against the winner of Tuesday night’s match between Johnson-Brock and Diller-Odell. Thursday’s final will be broadcast on Ol’ Red 99.5 with time and location to be announced.
