Heartland Shoots Past Wilber-Clatonia

HENDERSON – A hot shooting performance fueled the Heartland boys basketball team to a 72-53 win over Wilber-Clatonia on Friday.

The Huskies jumped out to an early lead behind all-state guard Lane Huebert and pushed the margin to 10 points by halftime. They didn’t slow down at all out of the locker room, opening the third quarter on an 8-0 run to push the game out of reach for a season opening victory.

Huebert knocked down seven three pointers for a 29 point outburst and Aaron Buller added 13. Wilber-Clatonia got 18 points from Regie Homolka and 17 by Hunter Cerveny but the Heartland onslaught was too much.

Meanwhile the Heartland girls wasted no time building a big lead behind their suffocating defense en route to a 51-14 victory.

The Huskies opened a 24-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. All-stater Kate Bergen led the way with 12 points and Taylor Quiring chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Korbyn Moldenhauer paced the Wolverines with 10 points.

Wilber-Clatonia will be on the road again next Thursday when they visit Raymond Central. Next up for Heartland is a tough home matchup next Friday against Exeter-Milligan.
