FAIRBURY, NE – The Fairbury wrestling team split duals against Central City and Syracuse at the ’47 Gym on Tuesday night.
On parents’ night, the Jeffs lost to Central City 49-29, but bounced back to beat Syracuse 45-24. That victory was Fairbury’s fifth dual win this season.
“We challenged our guys to come back and have a better day,” Fairbury head coach Derek Garfield said after. “We went to work Monday, had a good practice, and I thought it carried over. Obviously, we’d love to go 2-0. But, we’re making strides.”
Senior Ace York and junior Seth Firmanik had another strong showing for Fairbury. Firmanik (182) beat Central City’s Dillon Kohl in a major decision, 18-3. He then pinned Syracuse’s Spencer Bridgmon to end the night.
York (170) meanwhile pinned Central City’s Dyllan Lee and won a 4-1 battle with Bryan Bailey of the Rockets.
York and Firmanik showed the way for the Jeffs on Saturday in Hebron at the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament, where they both finished first. Fairbury still finished seventh out of 10 teams in that meet.
Tuesday’s meet had an added meaning for Fairbury head coach Derek Garfield. With his parents Jim and Jane in attendance, he was coaching against his twin brother, Darin, who’s the head coach of the Central City Bison wrestling team.
Darin is now 3-2 in the sibling rivalry, according to Derek.
“My brother and I used to come to Fairbury all the time to see our grandma (who taught at the school),” Derek Garfield said. “So, to have the whole family in Fairbury, coaching against each other, it’s an awesome opportunity. When the dual starts, it’s just another guy across, but I glance up once in awhile to see it’s my brother, and it’s a cool feeling.”
Fairbury has a dual at Beatrice on Thursday at 6 p.m. before hosting the Fairbury Invite on Friday at 1 p.m.
Other Fairbury results from Tuesday:
Carson York (126) – pin vs. Dyllan Belleci, Central City
Colton Rowlett (113) – pin vs. Syracuse, opponent name N/A
