EXETER – Exeter-Milligan got the high school basketball season off to a good start as the boys and girls teams both defeated Deshler by nearly identical scores Thursday. The Timberwolves took the girls game 57-45 while the boys won 58-44.
The Exeter-Milligan girls played strong defense that made it a struggle for Deshler to score. That allowed the Timberwolves to open up an 11 point leading heading into halftime. Then a 6-0 run to start the third quarter put them comfortably in front for good.
Kate Jansky led the way for Exeter-Milligan with 17 points and six rebounds while Hannah Beethe scored 14. Sydney Roth was Deshler’s top scorer with 14.
The boys game looked like Deshler would have the advantage early as the Dragons raced out to an early lead, but a poor shooting performance allowed Exeter-Milligan to battle back late in the second quarter and take a 24-23 lead into the locker room before outscoring Deshler by 13 in the second half.
Spencer Pribyl had a big game in the low post for Exeter-Milligan with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way. Peyton Dubbert scored 17 for Deshler but was their only player in double figures as the rest of the team struggled offensively. The Dragons hit just one three pointer in the game.
Both Exeter-Milligan teams go to 1-0 to start the season and will travel to Osceola on Friday. Deshler’s teams fall to 0-1 and will travel again Friday as they visit Silver Lake.
