CRETE – Doane University Volleyball learned on Monday morning that they will be returning to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since the 2012 season. The Tigers were one of 44 teams named to this year’s tournament and Doane was one of 20 teams that will receive a bye in the NAIA Opening Round. There will be 12 opening round contests with the winners advancing to Sioux City to meet up with the 20 teams that received byes.
Doane currently sits at 23-8 overall on the season, finishing fourth in the Great Plains Athletics Conference and advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament. For the Tigers, this is their first national appearance under Head Coach Gwen Egbert and 11th overall in school history.
In 2012, the Tigers lost in the NAIA Opening Round to Saint Franics (IL) in five sets. In 2010, Doane advanced out of the opening round with a three set victory over Trinity Christian and advanced to the pool play round in Sioux City.
This year, with the addition of 12 teams to the tournament, the NAIA pool play round expands from six pools to eight pools with the top two teams of each pool advancing to bracket play.
The NAIA Opening Round matches will be held on Saturday, November 19, at campus sites. Pool play begins on Tuesday, November 29, in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Tyson Event Center.
