CRETE – Doane University Athletics was honored on Thursday by the NAIA Champions of Character program. Doane was one of 66 schools to receive the Gold Five Star Award as 183 total institutions were honored. Institutions could be recognized as either Gold, Silver or Bronze winners.
Institutions are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character and earned points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earned points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
This past year, Doane Athletics varsity teams posted a department grade point average of 3.25, an institutional all-time best mark. The Tigers also had 19 of 22 teams post grade point averages over a 3.0 for the 2016-17 season.
Outside of competition, Doane athletes and coaches are seen in and around the community providing various services. This past year, teams assisted at the elementary school, local nursing homes and hospitals, and hosted youth events on campus to name just a few of the numerous community service projects Tiger athletes perform.
