COLUMBUS — The Crete girls basketball team held the Columbus Discoverers to just three points in the second quarter and rode their defense to a 43-25 win on Friday night.
Regi Zakrzewski scored eight points in the first quarter for Columbus (4-10) and Crete (8-7) owned just a two-point lead heading into the second quarter. That’s when the zone defense of the Cardinals took over and smothered the Discoverers. Crete outscored Columbus 11-3 in the second to carry a 10-point advantage into halftime.
Ellie Allen scored eight of her 13 points in the second half and the Cardinals cruised to the win. In addition to Allen’s big game, Crete got nine points each from Hannah Newton and Morgan Maly while Camry Moore added eight. Newton entered the game with four made threes on the season and hit three on Friday.
Columbus was led by Zakrzewski’s eight points and got contributions from Kennedy Jones’ six points and Lexi Kucera’s five.
