AURORA – Fairbury will have its toughest test of the season on Friday night, taking on an undefeated Aurora team that has already dispatched four ranked foes.
The Huskies come into Friday as the top-ranked team in Class C1 with a high-powered offense that rallied to take down top ten Class B rival Northwest 42-27 last week.
“You learn an awful lot about your team when they face adversity,” Aurora Head Coach Kyle Peterson shared. “It was great to see our defense play really well in the second half and not give up many points…”
The Jeffs are coming off of a year where they lost a lot due to graduation. After dropping the first three games of the season, Fairbury is taking some momentum into the contest after a 28-14 win over Falls City last Friday.
“Every week we’ve tried to get better and better and that’s what showed on Friday night,” Fairbury Head Coach Kameron Lenhart explained. “We made some plays on defense with Brody [Kroll] having that pick-six right at the end of the half that really ignited the team…”
The Jeffs defense will be tested. Aurora is averaging more than 55 points a contest and is led by senior quarterback Baylor Scheierman who has thrown for 1,550 yards and 23 touchdowns in the first four games.
“They have athletes everywhere, and it’s going to be difficult to stop, but we think we have a game plan that’s going to allow us to be put in a good position. We know that they know they’re good so they’re going to come in there with a confidence swagger and we’re going to have to match that,” Lenhart added.
This game also marks the beginning of district play for both teams, and Peterson is feeling good about where the Huskies are at.
“You certainly want to be playing your best football come district time, and I think right now we are. We have some bumps and bruises, we have some guys we need to get healthy here in the next couple of weeks. It’s an exciting time…”
The contest will be broadcast on News Channel Nebraska with live coverage beginning at 6:40 PM. The game will also be streamed online at NCNsportsNow.com.
