BEATRICE – A Wymore woman was flown by helicopter to a Lincoln Hospital, after being injured in a 5:45 p.m. Sunday accident, in Blue Springs.

Gage County Sheriff’s Deputies say 38-year-old Amy Swafford was the driver of a 1999 Mercedes Benz S-U-V that went out of control and struck a tree, near First and “A” Streets, in Blue Springs.

Investigators say it appears the vehicle was westbound on First, did not stop at a stop sign and may have been traveling at a high rate of speed.  Authorities say the vehicle hit a dip in the road, causing the driver to lose control.   The S-U-V then struck sidewalk steps along the south side of First Street before striking a tree.

Swafford suffered chest, wrist and leg injuries and was airlifted to Bryan West Hospital, in Lincoln. It was not known whether Swafford was using a safety restraint.  The driver’s side airbags in the vehicle deployed.

Gage County officers say based on statements given to emergency medical service personnel, alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident.  Authorities were also investigating whether a passenger briefly spoke with medical personnel but left the scene before speaking with law officers.  The accident remains under investigation.
