Veterans Photos Sparked Idea For Old Fashioned Soda Fountain

TECUMSEH – It all started in about 2006, when Wilbur and Bev Ramsey started collecting veterans photos from Johnson County, but their collection started to become too large, and they needed a place to house them. They soon became curious of a vacant store at 155 S 3rd St in Tecumseh, NE. However, this isn’t just any old vacant store, it’s actually the drug store where Bev first worked, pouring soda and making green rivers for customers many years ago.

It was a huge project to take on, and the Ramsey’s were unsure of all the work, but once the Tecumseh Economic Development Program offered a grant to help with the project, they agreed.

The renovation took about a year to complete and the transformation is incredible! The Ramsey Family fountain opened for business in November of 2009 and it’s been very successful from the start.

Bev is most proud of all the veterans photos that this building houses, and the collection just continues to grow.

The thing that catches your eyes the most when you first walk in the store, is the shiny 1939 Bastian-Blessing stainless steel soda fountain that Wilbur and Bev bought in Chicago. The counters and porcelain front are from the soda fountain that once stood in Chief Drug, and they were purchased in 1942.

This old fashioned soda fountain serves all of the sodas, malts, shakes, peanuts medleys, sundaes, green rivers, and so much more. The Ramsey Family Fountain also serves sandwiches, soups, pies, and cinnamon rolls from 10 am to 2 pm.

“We do appreciate the support from the community, but we get a lot of travelers just coming through and they’ll spot the old fashioned soda fountain and come in and have green rivers or peanut medley’s that they haven’t had for 30 years. It’s just all the people that stop by along with the photos that make the place,” stated Bev.

The Ramsey Family Fountain is truly another amazing hidden treasure in Southeast Nebraska that deserves a visit if you’re ever in the area. Take the time to enjoy one of Bev’s most famous delicious pies and look at the photos of the veterans ranging from the Spanish American war to the conflicts in Afghanistan today, and be thankful that there are men and women out there who are willing to fight for our country.
