Twenty Years Later, Community Members Celebrate Bob and Wauneta Burkley Wellness Center

FAIRBURY – Community members were invited out to enjoy a day of free activities to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Bob and Wauneta Burkley Wellness Center on Saturday. The rainy day didn’t keep children from jumping and climbing on a large inflatable obstacle course.
The Bob and Wauneta Burkley Wellness Center has provided fitness activities and education since September of 1996. Bob and Wauneta Burkley donated $1.1 million to the Jefferson Community Health Center in 1994 to build the center.
The Burkleys had been discussing building a private fitness center in Fairbury at the same time board members from the health center were considering opening a wellness center through Strategic Training and Resource Targeting program.
The Burkleys decided to support the wellness center through the hospital. More than 1,100 community members attended the grand opening celebration in late September of 1996.
The 20th anniversary celebration was free and offered the chance for family members to participate in contests like a kids dollar dive, a three-point shooting contest, a family swim contest and more. Free health smoothies and snack samples were made available. Community members also got the chance to win membership specials and other prizes.
