BEATRICE – An old tractor used on Ken Deardorff’s homestead in Alaska…..the last homestead under the Homestead Act of 1862…..will go on display at the Homestead National Monument of America, later this month.
A ceremony is planned November 20th, 2 p.m., to mark the monument officially receiving the 1945 Allis Chalmers Model C tractor. It was located earlier this year on the banks of the Stoney River, in the Alaska Wilderness.
The Friends of the Homestead, through a generous donation from Dr. C.T. Frerichs of Beatrice, recovered the tractor, using a helicopter, transporting it by ship and truck to Nebraska.
The tractor has been at the University of Nebraska Larsen Tractor Museum, where UNL students have been working on restoration of the machine.
Deardorff parked the tractor at the edge of a clearing on his Alaska homestead. It’s been in the same spot, up until being rescued in June, of this year.
