Time to Polka….in Wilber, Nebraska!


BEATRICE – Fire up the Wilber-Clatonia Alumni Band…for the 57th year, the National Wilber Czech Festival gets underway today.

A Children’s parade is tonight at seven and vendors will be set up along Wilber’s Main Street.  Vice President of the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber, Allen Brozovsky expects huge crowds, especially for the Saturday and Sunday parades down residential streets, Wilber’s main Street and the highway.

Brozovsky says the celebration started out quietly, many years ago when he was in high school.

The Wilber junior and senior Czech Dancers will be putting on performances during the celebration.  The Juniors instructor, Sheryl Kastanek says this is a special year, for her.

Dirk Altman is the long-time instructor of the Wilber Senior Czech Dancers.

Tonight’s opening events include an accordion jamboree, an art show at the Wilber Cultural Center, the presentation of community awards…and polka bands at the Hotel Wilber and T.J. Sokol Hall.
