Thayer Central boys track claims district title at Sandy Creek Thursday

FAIRFIELD – The Thayer Central boys’ track and field team took home the district championship in the Class C-7 meet at Sandy Creek Jr./Sr. High School on Thursday.

The Titans were in firm control by days’ end, racking up 100 total points, well ahead of second place Doniphan-Trumbull (74). Fillmore Central was fourth (60).

Starting in long jump,  Jacob Stoner (Fillmore Central) qualified for state by winning the event with a leap of 20 feet-2 inches. Kevin Burd (Thayer) also qualified, placing second (18 feet-10.25 inches).

In the 100-meter dash, Stoner (Fillmore) placed second and qualified for state (11.45). In the 400, Zachary Koss (Thayer) is state bound after winning the event (53.16).

Koss will also compete in the 800 meter run at state. He won that race Thursday as well (2:05.57). Koss qualified in the 800 last year as well, placing 7th overall (2:03.68).

Demetrio Maciel (Fillmore) also qualified for state in the 800, placing second (2:06.04).

In the 1600 meter run, Garrett Nichols (Fillmore) placed second to qualify for the state meet (4:52.36).

In the 3200, Thayer Central’s Damian Stewart placed second (10:39.34) and qualified for state for the second straight year. Stewart ran a 10:36.72 in the two-mile at state in 2018, putting him 18th overall.

In the 110 meter high hurdles, Phillip Price (Thayer) is a state qualifier, placing second (15.69).

Moving to relays, Thayer Central’s 1600 meter relay of Price, Dylan Fischer, Keegan Casey and Zachary Koss is “Burke bound” with a first place time of 3:37.27.

The Titans also took first in the 3200 meter relay (8:31.68). That team includes Trey Fischer, Keegan Casey, Dylan Fischer and Zachary Koss.

Last year at state, the Titans’ 3200 meter relay team (Z. Koss, T. Fischer, K. Casey, Aubrey Fangmeier) took first overall (8:13.03).


Thayer Central placed fourth as a team with 68 points in all. Fillmore Central was 10th with 11.

Starting in pole vault, Thayer Central’s Mikenzy Andersen placed second and qualified for state, clearing 9 feet-4 inches.

In high jump, Chloe Souerdyke (Thayer) took second and qualified for state, clearing 5 feet-1 inch. Last year, she tied for fourth at state in high jump (5 feet).

In shot put, Emily Welch (Thayer) qualified with a throw of 39 feet-9 inches. Erin Schmidt (Fillmore Central) also qualified (39 feet-5.5 inches).

In the 800-meter run, Katelyn Richardson (Thayer) took second and qualified for state (2:28.90). She qualified for state in this event last year as well, running a time of 2:32.91. That was good for 18th overall.
