Suspect Dead After Shooting Two Kansas Sheriff’s Deputies In Jewell Co

MANKATO, KS – The Highway Patrol in Kansas say a man is dead after he shot two Jewell County Sheriff’s deputies Tuesday morning.

The suspect, identified as Jason Lee Whitson, walked into the Jewell Co. Law Enforcement Center this morning and shot one deputy in the neck and another in the torso.

After the shooting Whitson escaped on foot and was later found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital for his injuries but was later pronounced dead.

The shooting of the two deputies, who suffered critical injuries, followed a disturbance at the Law Enforcement Center.

Area schools were placed on lockdown following the shooting, but have since returned to normal procedures.

Mankato is the county seat of Jewell county located about 30 miles south of the Nebraska state line near Superior.
