Students Prepping for Their Futures, Touring Colleges

FAIRBURY – Many students are enjoying their senior year while preparing for their future. Fairbury Junior – Senior High School Guidance Counselor Taylor Biehl says students are already touring colleges.

“Last week I took the seniors to Southeast Community College – Lincoln, and Thursday we are taking juniors to Peru State College and so – and then the week after that, we are taking seniors to University of Nebraska – Lincoln. So other schools around here would be Doane College, Wesleyan, we have some – maybe not really close, but that are going to University of Nebraska – Omaha, University of Nebraska – Kearney are some of the more popular ones.”

Biehl says that students who are planning to continue their education in college should be thinking about their grades even as freshmen.

“Sometimes what we see is that kids aren’t really starting to think about college until they are a junior. And when colleges are wanting your transcripts and things, your grades in the 9th and 10th grades matter – and so sometimes kids don’t realize that, or decide to get serious their junior year. So kind of trying to emphasize that it matters starting your freshman year.”

Biehl says throughout her experience of helping students become worthy college candidates, good grades aren’t the only important factor.

“Getting involved is huge. Making sure that they are marketable to scholarship people – selection committees is big because they’re competing against how many other students throughout the United States? Across the state of Nebraska? And other Fairbury students for those scholarships?”
