State Senator Says Property Tax Relief Foremost Need, For Citizens

BEATRICE – With Nebraska’s Governor seeking both income and property tax relief, a state senator who represents Gage County and southeastern Lancaster County says the property tax burden is of more concern, to most Nebraskans.

Senator Roy Baker says one proposal not getting as much attention is a plan that would remove some sales tax exemptions in an effort to provide property tax relief.   Baker says he plans to be a co-sponsor of the proposal by Senator Tom Briese, of Albion.

Baker, who has decided not to run for reelection, says he would probably fare better as a state senator by emphasizing income tax reductions, but after a career in public education as an administrator in rural area schools, property tax reduction is a bigger concern for most residents.

Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard is another lawmaker seeking property tax relief and has promised to bring the issue to the election ballot, if state lawmakers fail to act, this session.

Baker says there’s enough opposition to Erdman’s effort, including the Governor’s office, which may keep it from being approved.
