Southeast Community College Bond Issue Fails, by More Than 2-to-1 Margin

BEATRICE –  A $369 million Southeast Community College bond issue was soundly rejected Tuesday, by voters in the school’s 15-county service area.

The bond issue lost by a margin of nearly 68%, to 32%.

The vote was 135,087 in opposition to the proposal, 64,401 in favor.  The plan proposed a rebuilding of the Beatrice campus and improvements on the Milford and Lincoln campuses…..along with funding for the establishment of learning centers through SCC’s service area.

The bond proposal ran into stiff opposition from farm groups, such as the Nebraska Farm Bureau.  Former Governor Dave Heineman also publicly opposed the college’s plan.

In the only contested race for a spot on the SCC Board of Governors, Board member Bob Feit defeated challenger Vena Genuchi Alesio, by a vote of 20,656 to 13,443…….or a roughly 60% to 39% difference.
