BEATRICE – The City of Beatrice will contract with a Wahoo construction company for the brick street replacement project between Court and Ella Streets, on Second Street.

The council approved the bid of M.E. Collins Contracting Monday night, totaling $837,550.

City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says a state grant through the Nebraska Department of Roads pays for the bulk of the cost, with the city’s share, at 20 percent of the total.

The Nebraska Department of Roads received only one bid for the project.  The city will undertake continued paving work farther north on 2nd Street, from Ella to Grant.  That will be concrete surfacing from where the brick paving ends at 2nd and Ella, through the intersection at 2nd and Grant.  Bids will be taken soon on the city portion of the construction project.

Tempelmeyer says the idea is to do the two projects on 2nd Street from Court to Grant, at the same time.  Officials are trying to avoid closing the street for two separate periods of time, next year.  Second Street is a major bypass route for traffic traveling through Beatrice and to the Gage County Industrial Park.
