BEATRICE – Beatrice officials will be working to come up with a preliminary design and cost estimate for a new fire headquarters, to replace the more than 50-year-old department at the Municipal Auditorium.
Financing the project could come from an additional half-cent local sales tax, if that is placed on the November ballot and approved by voters. City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says that method of providing funds to support a bond issue, avoids placing more burden on property tax payers.

Tempelmeyer says one goal is to settle on a schematic design for the project that can be shown to the public. It’s been recommended that a new fire department have a site about the size of a city block.

Inadequate space in the current department requires fire personnel to stack vehicles in limited bays, based on which vehicles are most likely to be dispatched and how often.
If voters would approve an additional sales tax, the period that tax is in effect is based on a couple of factors.

One of the next steps is to come up with an estimated cost for a new fire station. Tempelmeyer says the city and fire department will have to first determine needed components of the project, including site acquisition.
