BEATRICE – As the fall season gets underway, two area lakes remain under health alerts for toxic blue-green algae.
Rockford Lake State Recreation area was placed under a health alert Friday….and an alert continues for Big Indian Creek Lake. Rockford is located southeast of Beatrice and Big Indian Lake south of Wymore.
Public Health Solutions Health District reports water samples taken at Rockford Lake earlier last week showed toxin levels above the alert threshold of 20-parts-per-billion…..for a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.
Signs are posted at lakes under alert and swimming is halted at beach areas. Recreational boating and fishing continues, but you should avoid any full body contact with the water, or ingestion of lake water. Persons also should keep pets away from the lakes under alert and don’t allow them to drink from the lake.
A health alert issued earlier for Iron Horse Trail Lake in Pawnee County, has now ended.
