Pawnee City Weighs Young’s Pumpkin Just Short Of His Iowa State Record

PAWNEE CITY – Don Young, a tree service company owner from Des Moines, Iowa, won the Git-R-Done award Saturday at the Pawnee City Harvest Bash for his giant pumpkin.

His pumpkin weighed 1,641 ½ pounds, just 20 pounds short of the Iowa state record he set in 2007.

It was fourth pumpkin he has grown to exceed 1,600 pounds.

Dave Davis, sheriff of Davis County, Iowa, was second with a 1,042 pound pumpkin. Followed by Jacob Martinez, Brenda Christensen, Mark McWilliams and Jim Bradberry.
Bradbury, a 45-year-old mechanic from Pawnee City, set the Nebraska state record for a squash at 683 pounds.

He credited good seed, good weather and a lot of luck.


Tony Prochaska set the Kansas state record for watermelon. His son, five-year-old Jacob was presented with a 162-pound watermelon that set the record and Tony followed up with a 188-pounder.

Russ Smith had the heaviest field pumpkin at 70.5 pounds.
