BEATRICE – Beatrice Police are warning people to be cautious, in what appears to be an increase in department calls for service recently, involving scams.
Police Captain Gerald Lamkin says scammers come up with various ploys to cheat people out of money. Some scams promise big winnings, if the person prepays the taxes. Lamkin says another common one requires the intended target to purchase something.

Lamkin says he recently received an e-mail from a person he knows, who has a successful consulting business. The e-mail asked for a favor…that he was out of state…and his niece needed something.
:39 “that morning”
Lamkin says people must be on their guard in today’s world, because there’s no shortage of people out there trying to deceive, and steal.
:14 “exactly true”
On occasion, a few local residents have lost money to online or telephone scams.

Lamkin says people should also be wary of scams tied to very big lottery jackpots, which have drawn a lot of publicity in recent weeks.
