One vehicle, injury accident in Virginia late Thursday afternoon

VIRGINIA – One person was injured after an accident in Virginia late Thursday afternoon.

Gage County Deputy John Chavez says some employees at a nearby co-op saw the driver fall on the ground, helped him up and took his keys until law enforcement arrived on scene.

Chavez said the car had a push-button starter and the driver was able to get in the car and start it.

The vehicle traveled south on a dead-end street, and then the silver Toyota Prius hit a pile of gravel.  Chavez said witnesses indicated the car was traveling about 50 miles per hour when it struck a rock pile, then came to rest in a nearby brush pile.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office cited 78-year-old William Thompson of Stromsburg, for driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was transported to Beatrice Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.   Thompson was not jailed because of the need for continued medical care.

Filley and Beatrice Fire and Rescue Departments responded to the crash.
