One Man Hospitalized in Beatrice Apartment Building Fire

BEATRICE – One occupant of an apartment building near the Gage County Courthouse was taken to Beatrice Community Hospital, from a late morning fire today.   Beatrice Firefighters were sent to the seven hundred block of Lincoln Street, adjacent to a courthouse parking lot, at around 10:20 a.m.

Fire Chief Brian Daake says firefighters contained the flames in a lower level apartment in the north side of the building.

The identity of the man taken to the hospital is not immediately known.  Daake says firefighters initially were trying to account for one other person believed to be in the building, but it did not appear anyone else was inside during a search of the building.  The fire was contained to the basement level apartment.

Police blocked off Lincoln Street just northeast of the Gage County Courthouse.   Two fire trucks and an ambulance were initially on scene.   Besides the man taken to the hospital, other occupants for the building apparently got out safely.

Going into the building, Daake said for firefighters…”it’s like going down a chimney”, to get to the lower level flames.

Shortly after arrival, smoke could be observed coming from the north side of the building.  It’s believed that the building has at least six apartments, on three levels.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
