BEATRICE – Rubble and only a few foundation walls are what’s left of the former Beatrice Community Hospital.
Demolition crews have been tearing down the structure in recent weeks, making way for new workforce housing, single-family homes and senior residential living.
Backhoes began tearing away at the hospital building in mid-March. Since that time, residential foundations and the framing for new homes has been underway.
The neighborhood area will include the Porter Estates housing project for persons 55 and older.
A new Beatrice Community Hospital was constructed along North U.S. Highway 77 and began operations in early 2012. Excel Development expressed interest in buying the old hospital property, and a purchase agreement was signed in February, of 2017.
The new housing projects are being financed through a public-private partnership that includes Midwest Housing Equity Group, Advantage Capital, Horizon Bank and the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority.
