COLUMBUS – A proposed $25 million project will transform the land that currently houses the old Walmart, and could have a huge impact on west Columbus.
WHO of Lincoln, is planning to redevelop the old Walmart and the land it stands on adding a hotel, apartment complex, and commercial space.
City documents say the firm is currently proposing the addition of a hotel with 75-85 rooms, a 3,000 square foot commercial space that may be used for a bank, approximately 55,000 square foot building, with 29,000 square feet for retail outdoor display space, multifamily residential buildings containing roughly 40-80 apartments, and an 8,000 square foot commercial building for a restaurant or retail, says city documents.
The proposed project was approved by the Planning Commission, and will need approval by the Columbus City Council at the first meeting in April.
The old Walmart building, located just northwest of the 33rd Avenue and 23rd Street intersection, was last used to house a call center that closed in early August of 2015.
