Nebraska Severe Weather Poster Contest Winners Announced

BEATRICE – A fourth grader from Thayer Central Elementary School is this year’s winner of the Nebraska Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest, sponsored by the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and other organizations.

10-year-old Halle Johnson’s poster featured a baseball diamond being struck by lightning, with the slogan, “One Strike from Lightning and You’re Out”.

The poster contest was open to all Nebraska fourth grade students and the winners were recognized Wednesday at the State Capitol, by Lieutenant Governor Mike Foley.

The top four students received certificates signed by Governor Pete Ricketts.   County Emergency Managers submitted the top entries from their counties.

The top four finishers were:

Halle Johnson, Hebron                            Thayer Central School

Sienna Boerkircher, Hemingford          Home BACE

Darrah Wagner, Creighton                     Creighton Community School

Canon Holley, Scotia                                Central Valley School

The contest was co-sponsored by the Nebraska Association of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service and The Nebraska Military Department.

It helps call attention to Nebraska Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is March 27th through the 31st.  A statewide tornado drill will be conducted Wednesday, March 29th at 10 a.m.
